A FIST POUNDED ON THE DOOR. Kid swirled Hailey into a seat and said, âDonât move. Iâll be right back.â
She couldnât move even if she wanted to. What was wrong with Kid? Or maybe she should be asking what was right with Kid? Since the day theyâd met, sheâd felt as if heâd been keeping her at armâs length, and that was quite literally true during their brief yet hot kiss. And now here he was with open arms. So much for shucking; her oyster had just popped open on his own.
âYouâre staring,â he said as he brought the pizza over to the coffee table.
âI just canât believe that you know the words to a musical.â She rose from her seat and went to the kitchenette to grab some paper plates and napkins. In the little refrigerator, she found two cold beers and brought them over, as well.
âWhat is so shocking?â he asked. âItâs not like you found out I wear womenâs underwear.â
Hailey dropped one of the beer cans and he laughed. âThat one is yours. And that was a joke. I donât wear womenâs underwear unless I lose a bet to Uncle Pete.â
âYou didnât,â she said, sitting on the floor beside him.
âFor twenty-four hours,â he confirmed.
âWas itâ¦?â
âA thong,â he confirmed.
Hailey laughed. She didnât want Kid to think she was laughing at him, but the thought of Kid wearing butt floss was too much. She tried to contain her laughter, but it just got worse.
âYou okay over there?â he asked with a grin.
âFine,â she said, coughing.
âAll I can say is after that I no longer find them even remotely sexy. I figure if a woman is willing to wear one of those, sheâs got issues.â
âItâs much better to just go free,â Hailey agreed.
Kid swiveled his head from the TV to her. He swallowed his bite of pizza with an audible gulp and said, âAre you saying what I think youâre saying?â
âItâs better to go commando, naked, in the skinny,â Hailey said.
âSo, you donât wearâ¦?â he said, trailing off.
âCanât stand panty lines.â It wasnât a total lie. Sheâd run out of clean laundry and wasnât wearing any underwear today, but if it made Kid suffer as much as she was then she could live with it.
It was Kidâs turn to choke on his beer. Hailey took a self-satisfied bite of pizza. She could feel Kid staring at the back of her jeans.
âDamn,â he said.
âWhatâs wrong?â she asked.
âI wish Jamie had been right about me.â
âWhat do you mean?â she asked.
âI wish I could melt things with my eyes,â he said, giving her posterior a dark look.
Hailey dropped her pizza back onto her plate. Very quietly, she said, âYou can.â
Kid stared at her for a long moment. Hailey wondered if maybe sheâd gone too far. Maybe Kid wasnât as hot for her as she was for him. Maybe heâd just been letting his guard down and teasing her because now that he had met the kids, he believed in the charity auction. Maybe it had nothing to do with her.
